‘The Brown Heart’: New Documentary Highlights Rising Heart Disease Risk in South Asians

During a hike in Nainital, US-based physician Dr Renu Joshi experienced chest pain that left her shaken. Though she recovered, the scare, coupled with the rising number of heart disease cases among South Asians, inspired her and her husband, Dr Nirmal Joshi, to act. Their new documentary, The Brown Heart, which premiered on JioHotstar this May, tackles the growing cardiovascular crisis in the South Asian community. The film features real-life stories and expert insights collected over two years from India, the US, and the UK. Dr Joshi directed the film, weaving over 100 hours of interviews into a powerful two-hour documentary. Supported by private donors and led by a dedicated team, including associate director Yogendra Singh, the film also inspired a plan to create shorter, student-focused versions to promote early health awareness. The Joshi duo hopes their work sparks real lifestyle change and saves lives.
