World Environment Day 2025: A Global Call to End Plastic Pollution

On June 5, over 150 countries will unite to observe World Environment Day 2025, the planet’s largest platform for environmental awareness. This year’s theme, “Putting an End to Plastic Pollution,” urges communities, governments, and industries worldwide to confront the escalating plastic crisis that threatens ecosystems, public health, and economies.
First established during the Stockholm Conference in 1972 and celebrated annually since 1973, World Environment Day highlights urgent environmental challenges. In 2025, the focus is on reducing the 11 million tonnes of plastic waste that enter aquatic ecosystems annually. India alone contributes nearly 9.5 million tonnes of plastic waste each year, severely affecting cities, coastlines, and marine life.
Events ranging from school activities to large-scale clean-ups are being organised globally. South Korea, the official host for 2025, will lead celebrations from Jeju Province, promoting its ambitious plan to eliminate plastic by 2040.
Plastic pollution worsens the global environmental crisis, compounding biodiversity loss and climate change. The UNEP-led #BeatPlasticPollution campaign supports sustainable alternatives and policy reforms, urging nations to act decisively. As World Environment Day marks its 52nd year, the world is reminded: the fight against plastic pollution is not just urgent—it’s essential for our future.
