Sanyukta Shrestha, a British designer of Nepali origin, has been recognised by the media as a Sustainable Fashion Icon, a pioneer in the sustainable bridal movement, and a “Greta of the wedding world.” Since launching her eco-friendly brand in 2011, a time when sustainability was not widely understood, she has championed the concept of sustainable luxury. With the opening of her flagship boutique, Sanyukta Shrestha has uniquely redefined the bridal market through her innovative and environmentally conscious approach. Her commitment to ethical practices and environmental stewardship has set her apart, offering brides a sustainable choice and demonstrating a business ethos that prioritises community and women’s empowerment. Winner of the PETA LUXURY VEGAN WEDDING AWARD, Sanyukta Shrestha is also the first designer of Nepali origin to have her design archived within the esteemed Fashion Museum, among over 100,000 historical objects dating back to the 16th century.
Her pioneering work has garnered international attention, attracting brides globally who seek to embrace a sustainable lifestyle. Driven by her expertise and passion for couture craftsmanship, Sanyukta specialises in bespoke wedding dress services, fulfilling her mission to empower women and create the wedding gown each bride envisions. The use of luxurious eco-friendly fabrics, an innovative approach, and the incorporation of Nepalese craftsmanship have established Sanyukta Shrestha as a unique destination where sustainability, innovation, and social responsibility converge. Her recent documentary, featured at London Fashion Week and broadcasted on Fashion TV as ‘the story behind the world’s best designer at work’, highlighted her conviction in fashion as a catalyst for cultural unity and social harmony. By showcasing Nepalese artisans, 95% of whom are women, the film underscored the significance of fair wages, safe working conditions, and societal respect for these vital yet often unseen contributors to the fashion and bridal industries. ‘Fashion should not only be aesthetically pleasing and comfortable, but it must also contribute positively to society. By valuing the artisans behind each creation, we ensure the preservation of traditional skills and contribute to a sustainable future for the fashion industry,’ Sanyukta Shrestha said.
Sanyukta’s holistic vision, integrating environmental responsibility with the empowerment of women, has been central to her work since her initial design, for which she received the Best Design award at the age of 17. The trajectory of her career, from a promising young designer in Kathmandu to a prominent figure in London’s fashion scene, and ultimately celebrated as a leading Sustainable Fashion Icon, exemplifies her enduring effort, development, resilience, and pioneering spirit. This remarkable journey is a testament to her unwavering dedication and perseverance, a press statement said.
