London – Newly appointed Labour leader, Andy Burnham, has been appointed as new Prime Minister of Britain.

King Charles III appointed him as the new PM on Monday.

Mr Burnham is the fifth British Prime Minister over the last four years.

 Earlier, Keir Starmer, went to see the British monarch and offered his resignation.

Born in Liverpool, Burnham is a former Labour MP and former Minister. He was serving as Mayor of Greater Manchester until recently. He resigned as Mayor and was elected as MP for Makerfield in a by-election held in June 2026.

‘Circuit Breaker for Britain’

In his first speech as prime minister outside No.10 Downing St. on Monday, Burnham vowed a “circuit breaker for Britain” that would involve “the biggest changes of the past 40 years.”

He said that he would announce a “10-year plan” for Britain later this year. He said he was committed to reduce the pain of the cost of living of common people and  to end rough sleeping in the country.

 “Let’s have the courage to fix the big things that politics has neglected,” said Burnham adding, let us reverse the “wrong turns” that Britain began to take in the 1980s when “political power was centralized, and economic power was privatized.”

“Few politicians have endured a more dramatic fall from grace than Sir Keir Starmer,” the BBC reported. 

“Less than two years ago, he was celebrating a landslide general election victory and was seemingly set to dominate British politics for years to come. Now he has been ejected from power by his own party and instead of ushering in a “decade of national renewal,” as he had promised, he is contemplating a return to the back benches.”
