Mark Carney Unveils Major Cabinet Reshuffle; Anita Anand Named Canada’s New Foreign Minister

OTTAWA, April 30 – Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced a sweeping Cabinet reshuffle on Tuesday, appointing Indian-origin Anita Anand as the new foreign minister in a significant move to shape his freshly re-elected Liberal government.

Anand, who previously served as defence minister, replaces Mélanie Joly, now appointed industry minister. Carney, who succeeded Justin Trudeau earlier this year and won last month’s general election, said the new Cabinet reflects a strong mandate to redefine Canada’s economic and security ties—particularly with the United States.

The reshuffle comes amid growing tensions with the U.S., where President Donald Trump’s trade stance has sparked a trade war. François-Philippe Champagne remains finance minister, and Dominic LeBlanc continues as minister of U.S. trade.

Highlighting Canada’s ambition to become an energy superpower, Carney appointed former Goldman Sachs Canada CEO Tim Hodgson as natural resources minister. Former journalist Evan Solomon will serve as Canada’s first minister of artificial intelligence.

More than 10 former ministers were dropped, including ex-defence minister Bill Blair. David McGuinty takes over the defence portfolio.

Half of the Cabinet members are women. Carney stated the new team is designed to “deliver the change Canadians want and need,” ahead of King Charles III’s address to Parliament on May 27.
